End of Summer Blog

End of Summer Blog

I joined summer bridge 2 weeks later than the rest of the class, despite this, I still did lots of things throughout summer in leadership. Some of which included setting up my notebook, setting up accounts ( like my current blogger account ) and cubby tags. We did lots of work around school with the main focus of preparing it for the upcoming year. In bridge, we made a video for the Ilima website, overviewed yearbooks, events, and editing software, as well as did lots of games that allowed us leadership students to get to know one another. For workdays, we did lots of cleaning and moving. Schedule pickup was also a top priority throughout the summer. With all that was done, we finished by going to the end of the year fieldtrip.

with being able to experience all this, there have been some better and lower aspects. my summer highlights are definitely the fun games and activities we did in bridge. I enjoyed being able to do these because it helped me feel better connected with the class especially since we have to cooperate for a school year. In bridge and workdays, we learned lots about leadership and how the school operates along with it. I found this very interesting because there were small but very important details I never realized would affect the school greatly and it was great to be able to learn more. This was for things like music, yearbooks, events, even tv duties. I found music to be one of my favorites just because of my love for listening to music and discovering new genres. Schedule pickup was another one of my highlights, though it wasn’t perfect, I enjoyed being able to help others in confusion and learn as well during those two days and extended weeks. For one of our first grades, we had to create bio cubes. I liked making my bio cube and documenting the process of its creation. Some parts such as my writing and explanations lacked a bit but it was a fun project that let me think back on my life and myself as a person and show somewhat of my strengths. However for every highlight there are lowlights. One of my main lowlights were having to move stuff around for workdays, and yes I do understand I have to do this throughout the year but I really underestimated how heavy the stuff was 😭. These are pretty self explanatory but I also disliked the mix-ups with parents at schedule pickup along with my performance in certain activities. I feel as though I could've been a more self directed learner during these times.

Before being part of leadership, I thought of it as a class where we learn to become leaders, and although some part of it is that, it's also about serving our school community and working to help others. Just from descriptions, I assumed that the class wouldn't be as fun and would be very work focused but with around two months of being in leadership I found it to be super fun with welcoming peers even during work. This year I am looking forward to experiencing firsts ( like tv, music, and even GT interviews ). I also look forward to the retreat and hope it will be a fun learning experience.

Leadership is different from other school experiences because I feel it is very hands on. By this I mean, you learn by doing these tasks straight up and organizing with your groups and periods. Other school experiences tend to have lots of unneeded lessons that don't work students to something they are proud of. To add to this, I am in leadership now because of the GT program. In my previous school, I was also a part of this program and though we haven't started GT for this school year, I already understand the main differences of the current one and my Pohakea GT. GT here is engraved within the leadership program. So although I am in GT I also get to learn about leadership practices. There is also one goal for this Gifted and Talented program, it's to report about what is happening on campus and air it on Ilima TV, whereas in my other school, students had to come up with mini projects that'd give back to the community. :D
